10 Years of Good Beers
Ten milestones that shaped our brewery, our community, and the beers in your fridge.
Ten years of Balter. It has been a wild ride of brewing, learning, and sharing tins with absolute legends all over the world. To celebrate double digits, we have pulled together ten of our favorite moments from the journey so far. While winning gold medal awards and tasting trophies are great, it’s more about the people and the good times with them we’ve had along the way.
These aren't in strict chronological order, just a collection of moments and memories, celebrated with enjoyment.
GARAGE PROJECT X BALTER - DRY HAZE
Teaming up with the Wellington wizards at Garage Project for Dry Haze was a massive milestone. It was our first beer to feature full artwork across the entire can and essentially paved the way for our whole Hazy lineup. It unexpectedly turned out to be our lowest carb offering ever too. Beyond brewing a deliciously crisp drop, Pete, Jos, and the crew brought as much character to the brewing process as the beer itself. A reminder that making good beer should be a whole lot of fun.
FIRESTONE WALKER INVITATIONAL
Getting the nod for the USA's premier invite-only beer fest was a serious pinch-yourself moment for the team. Sharing beers and swapping techniques over the years with icons like Brewmaster Matt Brynildson has been nothing short of an honor. Those trips across the Pacific deeply influenced Balter’s DNA, especially when it came to evolving our Hazy styles. It is always a privilege to see our beers holding their own on the world stage.
MICK FANNING CHARITY GOLF DAY
What started as a swing in the park has turned into an absolute monster of a charity event. Over the last four years, bringing together figures from sport, surf, and screen has helped us raise over $2.9 million for communities doing it tough. Between the million-dollar hole-in-one attempts, motocross shows, and questionable mid-winter lake swims, the energy is unmatched. It is proof that you can do a lot of good while having a great time.
USA (+NZ) MOUTH HOLIDAY SERIES
The Mouth Holiday Series was a chance to bring you the best hop flavours of NZ and the USA, while sitting on your back porch. Over two years, we dropped six limited releases in collaboration with absolute brewing heavyweights like Craft Coast, Green Cheek, and Firestone Walker. Each release was a little vacation for your tastebuds and a brilliant excuse to brew with our friends. Sharing their genius with Australia was an unforgettable run.
TINS OF GLORY
We dreamed up a ridiculous pub game involving sliding beer cans down a bench, and somehow it turned into a (semi) legitimate national sport. Watching Australians wholeheartedly embrace the sheer intensity and high-energy chaos of Tins of Glory has been a trip. From wild team uniforms to the stadium-level roaring crowds, it is the ultimate celebration of beer athleticism. Finding the country's best tin sliders is a responsibility we take very seriously.
BEER AND SPORT
Good beer and great sport go hand in hand, and we have been lucky enough to be front and center for some iconic moments. Whether it was painting a massive XPA mural at the MCG, pouring at the AFL Grand Final, or watching our Ball Boy retrieve stray shots from Ash Barty at the Australian Open. We even brought the good times to the fairways of the PGA. Being the drink of choice for fans across the country is exactly why we do this.
THE BIG SLAB
Australia is famous for its massive roadside attractions like the Big Banana and Big Prawn, so we figured it was time beer got the giant treatment. Erecting The Big Slab as our very first billboard was a proud, highly tongue-in-cheek moment for the whole crew. It stood tall as a monumental tribute to the humble carton. It was big, it was bold, and it made you extremely thirsty just driving past it.
WELCOME BACK TO THE PUBS
Few things have felt as good as saying "welcome back to the pubs" after the COVID lockdowns finally lifted. Seeing our mates throw open their doors and start pouring fresh XPA again genuinely made our hearts full. We even launched a Fresh Beer Locator to help people track down their first proper pint back out in the wild. It was a golden reunion of human to pub. A timely reminder to support your local, and not put your finger in other people’s parmis.
ADS… MADE WITH ENJOYMENT
We have never taken ourselves too seriously, and our advertising has always reflected exactly that. Campaigns like "Beers Do Come True" gave us a chance to put Mick Fanning in a suit and let our weirdest, most wonderful ideas run wild on screen. Remember Whale Gisms? It is always about capturing the feeling of cracking a cold tin with warm company. If we can make you laugh before you take a sip, we have done our job.
THE TAPROOM
Our Currumbin tappy is the absolute beating heart of Balter and the spiritual home of good beer. So many different crew visit the space, from crew in hi-vis having knock off drinks, to people in their early 20s tonguing for tinnies and trivia, or just Aunty Barbra wanting to taste Captain Sensible. These walls have hosted countless charity nights, live gigs, and epic weekend get-togethers. It is the place where conversation flows just as freely as the taps. It’s where we test out new beers that, if good enough, eventually get tinned for more people to enjoy. Naturally, there is nowhere else we would rather host our massive 10th birthday bash.
On that note…
